한국에서는 식용견이라 불리며 천대받던 이들. 뜬장 밖 세상 한 번 구경 못했을 이들. 아니 땅에 발을 딛는 순간이 세상의 마지막이었을 개들. 하마터면 동료들처럼 산불에 의한 화마로 까만 재가 되었을 아이들이 산불 직후 발견되었고 그 난리 통에도 지친 어미의 젖을 연신 빨아대고 있었습니다.
와치독이 불에 탄 개농장 개들을 모두 포기 받았고, 치료가 급한 화상 입은 아이들과 젖먹이 꼬물이들을 케어와 독드림이 모두 데리고 나왔습니다. 3월 초에 시작된 일이었습니다.
장장 9개월간의 돌봄. 초대형 견답게 아기 누렁이들은 초고속 성장을 하였고 정말 많은 분들의 노력 끝에 아기들 모두 차례로 미국으로 입양을 떠났습니다. 그리고 오늘, 한 어미에게서 태어난 아기들 중 마지막 아기 앨리의 입양 소식을 전해 드립니다.
벽난로, 그리고 천사 같은 사람 어린이 언니와 함께 누워 있는 착한 누렁이 앨리의모습에서, 우리 활동가들은 고단했던 긴긴 시간을 말끔히 잊을 수가 있는 것이겠지요. 하지만 아직도 많은 울진의 누렁이들이 대기하고 있습니다. 앨리 엄마도 아직 케어 보호소에 있습니다.
한 폭의 그림 같은 앨리와 사람 어린이의 예쁜 모습을 뒤로 하고 또 우리 활동가들은 치열한 현장 속으로, 우리 도움이 필요한 동물 곁으로, 그렇게 뚜벅뚜벅 걸어갈 것입니다. 누렁이들이 식용이 아닌, 반려견으로 살아갈 수 있는 해외 입양 기금이 많이 필요합니다. 함께 해 주세요.

“A story of Elly: surviving from a slaughterhouse and wildfire”
Tosa is a dog breed that generally gets disdainful treatment in Korea and typically known as a “dog breed for meat.”
Most of them are raised in dog meat farms, trapped in hanging wire cages for their whole lives: when they take the first step outside is most likely the last moment of their lives. When we found Elly’s family after the Uljin wildfire, a lot of Tosa friends of theirs were burned to death, and these newborn puppies were struggling to suckle their mother out of this mess.
In March this year, Watchdog managed to make the farmer give up on ownership of the dogs, and CARE and Dogdream rescued a number of dogs including Elly’s family. We have taken care of them for 9 months, and they grew up really fast into super-sized dogs, just as Tosas are known to be.
In the meantime, we were able to send all those puppies, Elly’s siblings, to the U.S. for adoption one by one, thanks to your utmost support. And today, we are gladly giving you great news about Elly, the last puppy among those survived puppies: Elly is finally adopted.
When we see Elly relaxing with a kind-looking child, in front of the fireplace, it truly feels like all the difficult times that we have been through vanish like the snow. However, there still are a number of Tosas waiting for adoption, including Elly’s mother who is being taken care of at one of the shelters of CARE.
So we shall leave behind a beautiful and heartwarming picture of Elly for a moment, and take our steps back into the harsh reality, to help the animals who desperately need it.
