그동안 사정이 있어 구조견의 사연도 올리지 못 했던 아이. 미미의 이야기입니다.
달려가던 흰 차에서 떨어진 말티즈가 있었습니다. 달리는 차창 밖으로 개를 던진 것은 유기를 의미합니다. 그런데 가까이 달리지 않은 차량의 운전자가 목격한 것이기에 목격차량의 블랙박스에도 유기범의 차량 넘버는 찍히지 않았습니다. 말티즈는 안타깝게도 달리다 이내 사라졌고 목격자는 특이한 옷을 입고 있던 미미를 케어로 제보하였습니다.
하지만 너무 난감한 상황, 도로에서 사라진 개를 무작정 찾을 수는 없기 때문입니다. 그렇게 잊고 있던 미미는 며칠 후 케어의 회원에게 운 좋게 발견됩니다. 비슷한 지역이었고 특이한 옷이 똑같습니다. 회원은 미미의 입양처를 알아봐 줄 수 없냐고 하였고, 케어는 미미가 제보 내용의 개일 수 있다는 생각을 하며 입양처를 찾고 있었습니다.
그런데 회원님은 미미의 유기 사연을 알지 못했으니 혹여 주인이 있을까 싶어 지역 정보 어플에 미미를 올렸고 그 내용을 보고 주인이라는 사람이 나타났습니다. 버린 것은 자신이 아니라 남편이라는 것, 그리고 남편도 아이를 좋아하지는 않았지만 버리기까지는 하지 않았을 것이라는 것 등 주장에 일관성이 없었습니다.
케어는 그 주인이라 주장하는 사람에게 물었습니다. “좋아하지도 않았다는 남편이 강아지를 혼자 데리고 외출한 이유는 무엇인가? ” 이 질문에는 결국 대답을 하지 못했습니다.
케어는 남편을 유기범으로 고발하지 않는 대신 미미의 소유권을 포기 받았습니다. 미미가 또 같은 일을 당할 수도 있다는 생각에 포기하게 하는 것이좋다고 생각했습니다. 이 시간이 꽤 오래 걸렸습니다.
미미는 귀가 들리지 않는 장애를 갖고 있습니다. 그래서 좀 둔하고, 느립니다.
그 점을 미워했다는 남편, 어쩌면 그 가족은 또 어디선가 개를 구매할 지도 모르겠습니다.
장애 없는 아이는 유기하지 않을까요? 다시는 미미와 같은 일이 벌어지지 않기를 바랍니다.
케어는 미미를 미국으로 입양 보냈습니다. 작은 순혈종이지만 장애가 있기에 국내 입양이 어렵다는 판단에서였습니다. 미미는 미미의 장애를 따뜻하게 품어줄 가족을 만났습니다. 어디든 가족과 함께 다니고 있습니다. 그리고 이제 평생 안전하게 살 것입니다.
케어에서 구조하고 입양 보내는 아이들이 매우 많습니다.

A white car slowed down on the highway, abandoned a Maltese, and left.
A Maltese, dressed in a conspicuous outfit, ran along the guardrail for a long time and soon disappeared. One informant who witnessed the whole situation reported to Care, although he could not record the vehicle number due to the distance. But it was a difficult situation for us, too, because you can’t find a dog that disappeared on the road without any clues but its flashy outfit. Fortunately, however, the abandoned Maltese, Mimi, was found by one of the members of Care.
The member, who found Mimi but did not know the details of the story, posted Mimi’s information on a local community app. So, a woman who claimed to be Mimi’s owner made contact with us, insisting that it was her husband who abandoned Mimi, not her. Her insistence was utterly inconsistent, and it later became something along the line of “although my husband didn’t like Mimi, he wouldn’t really have abandoned her.”
Care couldn’t hand over the puppy when every circumstance leads to the conclusion that it was obviously an abandonment by them. We spent a long time persuading her to give up the ownership of the dog on the condition that we would not accuse her husband of abandoning an animal.
Mimi is deaf, and because of that, she’s a little dull and slow. The owner made an excuse that her husband hated Mimi for that, but would they have not abandoned Mimi, if she was not deaf? We do not think so, and we hope these couple never get another dog after Mimi.
Even though Mimi is a small-sized, purebred Maltese dog which is one of the most popular breeds in Korea, we concluded that it would be difficult for her to find a new adoptive family here because of her disability. So, Mimi went to the U.S. for adoption and met a new family who would love everything about her, including her disability. She will live safely with her new family for the rest of her life.
Care rescues and sends a great number of dogs for adoption. We are always short of harnesses and leashes which we need when we send dogs oversea for adoption. We would appreciate it if you could provide us with harnesses and leashes for medium and large-size dogs.
