어디서 끌려 왔는지 모를 리트리버 아기가 시골도로 앞, 철물점 한편에 묶이게 되었습니다.
발견한 그날, 쩌렁쩌렁 우는 것을 보니 어미와 막 떨어져 끌려온 것 같았습니다.
그 철물점은 밖에 무단으로 적치한 철근들을 지키느라 개를 늘 묶어 놓았는데요.
문제는, 개들이 계속 바뀐다는 것입니다.
누렁이가 그랬고, 꼭 어느 집 반려견이었을 보더콜리도 그랬습니다.
보더콜리가 사라지고 한 달쯤 후, 리트리버 아기가 그 자리를 대신했지요.
아기는 바들바들 떨었고 물그릇의 물은 얼어 있었습니다. 꽁꽁 얼은 얼음에 혀를 대 보지만 주인은 무관심합니다.
RUN 의 활동가들이 매일 출퇴근하는 길, 계속 개들이 반복해 사라지는 그 공간을 그대로는 둘 수 없었고 아기 리트리버 마저 사라지면 안 되겠다는 생각에 철물점 주인을 조심스레 여러 차례 접촉해 보았습니다.
그러나 고집불통 철물점 주인은 말이 통하지 않았습니다. 개장수에게 먼저 개들도 모두 보냈다는 말과 함께 돌아온 건 무지막지한 욕설….
그리고는 그날, 아기 리트리버를 없앴습니다.
텅 빈 허름한 개집.
하지만 포기하지 않았습니다. 아기였기에 죽지는 않았을 것이라 확신했습니다. 케어는 아기 리트리버를 찾기 위해 동네를 수소문했습니다. 인근 개농장들 주소를 확보해 다녀 보았고 철물점 주인이 개농장들과 친하다는 것을 알고 철물점 주인 때문에 개농장들 폐쇄를 시킨다는 소문이 돌게 했습니다.
그리고 며칠 후, 다시 철물점을 찾아갔습니다. 철물점 주인의 태도가 온순해졌습니다.
그리고 순순히 아기 리트리버를 보낸 곳을 알려 주었습니다.
놀랍게도 아기 리트리버는 개인활동가의 집에 있었습니다. RUN 활동가들처럼 아기 리트리버가 걱정되어 평소 보러 다닌 여성분에게 “아기 리트리버 때문에 골치 아프게 됐다”며 얼른 데려가라고 한 것이었습니다. 여성분이 평소 돈을 준다고 해도 주지 않았다는데 활동가들의 접근이 꽤나 부담이 되었던 것입니다.
그렇게 아기 리트리버는 구조되었습니다. 어디서 추운데 떨고 있지 않을지, 개농장 뜬장에 처박혀 있지 않을지 걱정했던 활동가들은 아기 리트리버를 품에 안고 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 점심시간마다 찾으러 다녔으니까요. 그새 몸이 두 배가 컸습니다. 몸집이 커지면 개농장으로 갔을 아기 리트리버는 이제 입양 준비를 하고 있습니다.

A baby retriever that appeared to have been just separated from its mother was tied up at a hardware store in the countryside. The puppy trembled in fear and the water in the bowl was frozen, but the owner never seemed to care. The bigger problem was that the dog guarding the store has changed repeatedly.
We worried that this puppy would also disappear, so we tried to contact the owner. But the owner was a very bullheaded choleric man, and he poured abuse on us. And after that day, the puppy retriever disappeared. But we had one reason not to give up on the puppy.
Even if the retriever was sent to a slaughterhouse, we believed that it wouldn’t be slaughtered immediately, for it is still a puppy. didn’t think he would have killed it because he was still a baby. We began to ask around the neighborhood and secured addresses for nearby slaughterhouses; we also discovered that the hardware store owner was in a very close relationship with the owners of slaughterhouses.
Care has spread rumors among residents that we will shut down slaughterhouses because of the hardware store owner. When we revisited the hardware store a few days later, the owner’s attitude changed completely. He told us where he sent the retriever.
It turned out that the puppy was at the home of a private activist, who was investigating the retriever for the same concern we had. The owner gave up the dog and meekly handed it over to her, presumably because he felt pressured and anxious with many activists’ repeated approaches.
That is how the puppy retriever was rescued. The puppy grew twice its size in such a short period. It was slated to be sent to the slaughterhouse when it grew more in size.
